Brian J. Smith answers: Oddly enough, these days we do mostly green screen. You rarely see a blue screen now, unless you're shooting in a heavily forested area. It got easier once we had seen a couple episodes and finally saw what our characters were looking at. Those first few episodes you just had to invent something in your head, or design the CGI effect in your mind so you had something to react to. Now, after a full season in the can, we're old pros at the green screen. For instance, we know exactly what the "FTL effect" looks like when we're in the observation deck.
