Rush’s Costume

Rush’s Costume

Valerie Halverson is the Costume Desinger for Stargate Universe.  Here she describes her process for creating Dr. Nicholas Rush's costume.

Dr. Rush takes himself pretty seriously, both in his work and his understated style.  While having initial discussions with Robert Carlyle we found we had the same ideas for his character.

When Robert and I met we decided that rather than the pants I had made for him he looked more in charater wearing jeans.  As Robert has great style himself, it was easy to see what looked good on him and incorporate it into his costume.

The one thing I wanted I wanted to have as part of his costume was a vest (or waistcoat as Robert calls it).  I felt it lent itself to a professorial look but also was an interesting layer for him to have.

As I designed the vest I decided to put something in the lining that only Robert and I would know about.  A little ode to the galaxies.  By cutting the fabric a certain way I was able to get a design that looked like a planet surface (see photo).  When I showed Robert my idea he took it another step and had us put some pockets inside where he keeps his pad and pencil.  So, in fact, the fans see it every week.   Not a very good secret!

I have also layered T-shirts under Dr. Rush's vest, so he has more depth to his costume.

And lastly he wears a very smart brown suede jacket that was seen on Icarus when he met the senator.  He took it off when he got down to work, but has it on the Destiny for future episodes.
